KFC is fully halal-certified in Muslim-majority countries and at selected certified branches elsewhere. Standard Western branches are not.
KFC operates through franchises, and halal status is decided market by market and sometimes restaurant by restaurant. There is no global answer, and a chain-wide claim in either direction is wrong.

In certified markets the chicken is slaughtered to halal requirements by approved suppliers, the supply chain is audited, and the kitchen carries no pork products. In the UK, certified branches use chicken slaughtered under a recognised standard and KFC publishes the list of participating restaurants. Two details in that programme are worth knowing because they change the answer for some people.
Stunning. Most UK halal-certified poultry is stunned before slaughter. The prevailing view among UK certifiers is that reversible stunning that does not kill the bird is acceptable; a significant body of scholarly opinion disagrees. If you follow the stricter position, a UK halal certificate may not be sufficient for you.
Menu scope. In certified UK branches the chicken is halal but some side items and desserts are not part of the certification, and bacon-containing products are removed from the menu at those sites. Check the specific restaurant's notice rather than assuming.
In a standard Western KFC the chicken comes from conventional processing with no Islamic slaughter. Beyond the meat itself, the fryers handle products across the menu and the seasoning blends are not certified. Fries and non-meat sides are cooked in shared oil.
Even where the meat question is resolved, some KFC desserts and sauces have contained gelatin or dairy derivatives that need separate checking. Where a branch is fully certified this is covered by the certificate; where only the chicken is certified it is not.
KFC maintains market-level halal information and, in the UK, a published list of certified locations. A certificate should be displayed in the restaurant naming the certifying body and its expiry. If staff cannot point to it, treat the branch as uncertified. Phone answers from a busy counter are not reliable on this — franchise staff frequently get it wrong in both directions.
Most of the confusion comes from people generalising their local experience. Someone in Kuala Lumpur, someone in Birmingham and someone in Chicago will all give a confident and completely different answer, and each is describing their own market accurately. The only answer that matters is the one for the restaurant you are standing in.
